A woman in the U.S was allegedly harassed, beaten and sexually assaulted on a transit train while passengers stood by and watched.

Instead of intervening onlookers filmed the assault and posted the videos on social media.

It wasn't until an off-duty railway worker boarded the train that the authorities were finally alerted.

Not one of the passengers called 911.

"As many as 10 people actually saw some part of the attack on this rider," says Police Chief Thomas Nestel III, "[surveillance footage shows] people were holding their phones up as if they were recording or taking pictures."

The alleged rapist was arrested not long after police were made aware of the assault.

Authorities say the attack could have ended much sooner if passengers had intervened.

“Anybody that was on that train has to look in the mirror and ask why they didn’t intervene or why they didn’t do something,” says Upper Darby Police Superintendent Timothy Bernhardt, "collectively, they could have gotten together and done something.”
