Kids Don't Owe Their Parents Anything

For the past year Lisa Pontius has been making TikTok videos about parenting, however, it's one of her most recent ones that's caused quite a stir on social media.

The 33 year old mum went viral on TikTok recently after making a video about how "kids don't owe their parents anything."

In the video she says, "children don't owe their parents a certain kind of relationship, and depending on the parent, they might not owe them respect either because that shit is reciprocal."

"You're not loving and providing for your children with the expectation that they will blindly obey and do whatever you say as adults," she says, "honestly if you're raising your kids well and you're an emotionally mature person you wouldn't want them to just blindly accept things that are not good for them."

Lisa says "taking care of your children's physical and financial needs" should be the bare minimum.

"They are people and they don't you owe shit because you took care of them," she says.

The viral TikTok video now has over 5.7 million views on the platform.

It's been shared on Buzzfeed and discussed on popular American talk show, The Talk.

"You don't get a participation trophy for housing your child or keeping your child clean," the TikToker told Buzzfeed, "the whole 'roof over your head' argument is manipulative, because in theory, wouldn't you have had a place to live for yourself regardless of if you had children? A kid isn't a freeloading roommate, they're your dependent and your responsibility."
