Badass Female Led Movies Coming Out in 2020

- DEMI LYNCH -

Bombshell

Now yes this movie is already out in the U.S but sadly for all of us Aussies we have to wait until January! The movie has already been nominated for two Golden Globes. And features an incredible cast including Charlize Theron, Margot Robbie, Nicole Kidman, Connie Britton, John Lithgow, Kate McKinnon ... just to name a few. The story looks at the takedown of former Fox News CEO and Chairman Roger Ailes for numerous sexual harassment allegations. Looking forward to seeing how Bombshell depicts the toxic work environment within Fox.

Birds of Prey And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn

"You know what a 'Harley Quinn' is? A Harley Quinn's role is to serve. It's nothing without a master. And no one gives two shits who we are beyond that."

Hearing this opening line in the Birds of Prey trailer always gets my attention. Like many I was disappointed in the execution of Suicide Squad but I ADORED Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn. And I cannot wait to see her in her very own film (without the Joker).

FUN FACT: Cathy Yan will be directing the film making her the first Asian woman to direct a superhero movie.

It's rumoured this film will be part of a Harley Quinn trilogy depending on how it goes in the Box Office. Fingers crossed we won't be disappointed.

Promising Young Woman

I have watched the 2 minute and 31 second trailer at least 10 times now and still after each watch I am left gobsmacked. Carey Mulligan becomes a rape-culture vigilante that seeks revenge on "nice guys" that take advantage of intoxicated women. Killing Eve showrunner Emerald Fennell makes her directorial debut in this revenge thriller with a KILLER CAST including Laverne Cox, Alison Brie, Connie Britton, Adam Brody, Jennifer Coolidge and Alfred Molina. Many have took to social media to say Promising Young Woman is already the best movie of 2020 because it really is the movie women of the world have been waiting for!

P.S Also how incredible is the haunting cover of Britney Spears' "Toxic."

Wonder Woman 1984

The 2017 Wonder Woman origin blockbuster broke so many barriers and records. It was the first female-directed live-action film to have a $100 million+ budget and it's the highest-grossing superhero origin film of all time. So you can imagine my excitement when I saw Wonder Woman was coming back in 2020, along with Patty Jenkins as the director. Very intrigued to see comedy legend Kristen Wiig as Wonder Woman's archenemy Barbara Minerva (also known as the Cheetah).

Respect

Jennifer Hudson stars as the legendary music icon Aretha Franklin. It hasn't been confirmed yet what aspects of Aretha's life will the film look at. But the cast look incredible - it will star Forest Whitaker, Marlon Wayans, Audra McDonald and the one and only Mary J. Blige. Aretha Franklin was involved in the development of the film until she passed away on August 16 2018.

Black Widow

About time Black Widow got her own movie! Only took Marvel 10 years! The Russian spy first appeared in Iron Man 2 in 2010 when she took down Happy in the boxing ring. So you can imagine fans' excitement for the upcoming Black Widow movie.

Mulan

I must admit it is going to be hard to not compare the 2020 Mulan to the 1998 Disney animated classic. But I am excited to see how New Zealand filmmaker Niki Caro interprets the Disney cult classic for the live action remake. Hearing the instrumental version of the "Reflection" in the trailer has already given me chills.

Misbehaviour

I am very excited for this film! The movie looks at the eruption of feminist protests during the 1970 Miss World Beauty Pageant, and the lack of representation of women of colour in the pageant. Keira Knightly stars as feminist activist Sally Alexander and Gugu Mbatha-Raw stars as pageant contestant Jennifer Hosten who hopes to be the first woman of colour to win Miss World. It'll be interesting to see the conflicting views of beauty pageants in this film.
